Challenge & Strategy

Design a residential space that not only meets functional needs but also enriches the daily lives of its occupants through thoughtful human experience centered architectural design.

Strategic Solution

Researched a series of patterns and experience concepts that have been identified to increase human comfort and health, largely from Christopher Alexander’s research in a Pattern Language. Diagrams below are from this research.

The house is a complex of smaller buildings for A) socializing, B) rest, and C) work.

Roof forms cascade from the most important space at the center.

Angled mirrors hide the view to the opposite building, and instead show the surrounding forest.

Viewpoints lead users through the home, from one point of interest to the next.

Window placements frame views to various parts of the forest - the canopy, the forest floor, and prominent trees.

Nooks and alcoves are created with adaptability in mind. This space is designed as a bunk bed alcove to accommodate guests, or as a reading nook.

Ceilings are lifted creating low points for intimate spaces and tall points for open airy spaces.

This project shows how integrating user experience principles into architecture can create living spaces that are not only functional but also deeply enriching for their inhabitants. This design concept has resulted in a project that the homeowners love, and reduces carbon footprint by 95% of a typical new build home.
